Himachal’s Deepak Gupta elevated as C J Tripura

Shimla : Deepak Gupta has been appointed as the first chief justice of the newly established high court of Tripura.

A release of the state high court here said Monday that justice Gupta is the first judge from the state to be appointed directly chief justice of another state .

Gupta will be given a farewell by a full court reference in the high court Tuesday . He was made judge of the HP high court in Oct 2004 .

Born in 1955 in Nurpur in Kangra district . Educated in Shimla Gupta started his practice in the high court here in 1978 .

In his stint as judge of the high court here he delivered many significant judgements on many issues particularly concerning the environment of the state as head of the green bench .

In a landmark judgement , the bench headed by him last year imposed a Rs 100 crore fine on JP Cement Company for violation of the environment in Solan district .

He also passed many other important orders including banning use of non-biodegradable packing on junk foods .

His other notable judgements include on the prices of essential drugs, framing of a transfer policy , installation of GPS system in commercial vehicles , installation of electronic barriers on major entry points of the state .
