Shimla to get new water metres

News

One of India’s oldest civic bodies, the Shimla municipal corporation has started installing automated mechanical water metres.

Shimla mayor Sanjay Mayor says there are some 22,000 domestic and 7000 commercial connections in this Himachal Pradesh capital.

But around 32,000 old metres will be replaced by mechanical ones by the end of next month the mayor said. The entire operation will cost Rs 9.25 crore.

Most of these metres are out of order for years and all consumers have been getting bills at a fixed flat rate which has angered many residents.

The Shimla municipal corporation local elections are expected to take place sometime this month.
