Now only women village heads in Himachal

Shimla: In a populist move the Himachal Pradesh government could reserve all seats of the village pradhans for female candidates.

So all male candidates hoping to contest the forthcoming village council elections for the post of headman will be disappointed.

The state’s panchayat raj minister Anil Sharma says the government is considering reserving all the seats of pradhans only for women in polls due in the next few weeks.

The government is considering this despite there being more female pradhans than males in all sitting panchayats.

This move is clearly a populist move and could result in the weakening village councils at the grassroots level.
