Mr & Mrs 55 , Aar Paar , Guru Dutt’s early films

Who said the great Guru Dutt only made serious and heavy films like Pyasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool .

He also made light comedies . Mr & Mrs 55 (1955) and Aar Paar (1954) were made during the formative years of this genius .

He honed his craft in these early films and prepared himself for the two classic films which were to follow . So great are Pyasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool they are considered the greatest films of world cinema .

And if you thought the beautiful Madubala could not play a westernised role , forget it , here(Mr & Mrs 55) she plays Anita with aplomb .

And Dutt plays a cartoonist(cartoons in the film were drawn by R.K.Laxman) Lalita Pawar the feminist aunt controls her pretty neice Anita but gives up in the end .

Music is by O P Nayyar , Preetam Aan Milo , Thandi Hawa Kali Ghata and Ae Ji Dil Par Hua Aisa Jadoo .

And as always there is Johnny Walker in a Guru Dutt film .

And in Aar Paar Dutt plays a taxi driver opposite Shyama . There is Johnny Walker , Shakila and a very young Jagdeep .

Lilting songs are Babuji Dheere Chalna , Kabhi Aar Kabha Paar , Ja Ja Bewafa and Yeh Lo Main Hari Piya .

And in both these films Guru Dutt doesn’t focus the camera on himself but his characters . That was to change in his later films .
