Telephone cable thefts continue in Shimla

Shimla : Stealing of BSNL’s overhead cables has shown a major spurt in the last month in this Himachal Pradesh capital affecting landline phones and broadband services in many places, officials of the state run company say .

 There have been at least ten theft cases of cables all over the town particularly in the Jakhu and Snowdon hospital region where cables have been repeatedly stolen and police hasn’t been able to nab the thieves .

 One local newspaper report said BSNL officials were so frustrated that they were now thinking of taking up the matter with chief minister Virbhadra Singh .

 Cable thefts is a huge problem in the countryside where there are virtually no landline phones now as people have been forced to switch to WLL phones .

 Himachal already has one of the deepest penetration of mobile phones .
