Manali-Leh road opens after 5 months

Shimla: The 427 km long high altitude snow covered Manali-Leh road has been opened for traffic by the Border Roads Organisation(BRO) after more than five months,an official of the BRO said today.

Teams of BRO from Leh side and Lahaul side met at Sarchu for a golden handshake after opening the high mountain road.

Due to less snowfall last year the Manali-Leh route opened on March 25.

Rohtang La, Baralacha, Tanlang la, Lachulung La and Nakee La are some of the high passes on this road.At certain places the snow was 20 to 30 ft high a BRO official said.

It remains to be seen how soon the road actually opens for light vehicles followed by heavy vehicles.
