Shimla weather station soon at Vidhan Sabha
Shimla: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will have a new weather observatory at Himachal Prdesh’s Vidhan Sabha in Shimla in the next few months.
Currently it is located at the Central Potato Research Institute(CPRI) which is several hundred feet below the Vidhan Sabha. The CPRI observatory is located at the CPRI campus for over two decades.
Many people feel the town has been recording record high tempertures due to the CPRI being much lower than earlier weather stations.
For over a century the weather observatory has been at the Central Telegraph Office(CTO) building on the Mall Road. But the Telecommunications ministry asked the IMD to shift its observatory from this heritage building without giving any reason.
IMD sources told Sun Post that the new observatory will be set up in the Vidhan Sabha campus this year.
The Vidhan Sabha is adjacent to where Kennedy House used to be. Kennedy House was the first residential house built in Shimla by the British in 1822 until it burnt down in a fire in the early 1980s.
