Big fire at Shimla’s Raj era castle

imageShimla :Gorton Castle a heritage building of the colonial British era in downtown Shimla was engulfed by a big fire early Tuesday with several fire tenders trying to control the flames .

“The fire started on the top floor of the building which houses the office of the Auditor General of India,” Dinesh Malhotra , deputy commissioner Shimla said .

There are reports that important records and files on this floor have been destroyed by the fire .

The multi-storied solid grey stone and deodar wood building was built in 1904 .

Since independence it has been the office of the auditor general of India .

Shimla which served as the summer capital of colonial British India has many impressive buildings of that period. Some of these have also been destroyed by fires over the years .
